Designing for Everyone: Heritage Meets Inclusivity at PCU Library

PCU Library welcomed participants of the Asia Summer Program (ASP) 2025 for an engaging and insightful session as part of the course “Universal Design for Buildings with Heritage Context.”

In this session, participants explored the concept of universal design—creating spaces that can be accessed and enjoyed by everyone, regardless of ability or background. Through hands-on simulations, they experienced various accessibility challenges firsthand, allowing them to develop not only a deeper understanding of inclusive design principles but also greater empathy for diverse user experiences.

The activity demonstrated how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between heritage preservation and modern accessibility, encouraging future designers and planners to make historic environments open to all. As a space that values inclusivity, the PCU Library was proud to support this learning activity—showcasing how libraries can serve as living laboratories for empathy-driven education.

This enriching session was part of the team-taught course led by:

  • Mr. Gunawan Tanuwidjaja, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., IAI
  • Mr. Chandra, S.IIP., M.Sc.
  • Dr. Arina Hayati and teaching assistants
  • Mr. Eka Christian

The course “Universal Design for Buildings with Heritage Context” is officially offered in the Asia Summer Program 2025, an international program blending academic learning, cultural exchange, and real-world experience.
